5 Android apps you shouldn't miss this week! - Android Apps Weekly - Android Authority

Android Apps Weekly - featured image
Welcome to the 196th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are your headlines from the last week:
  • Sony announced a new thing called PlayLink at E3 2017. The idea is that some PlayStation 4 games will be partially controllable using companion apps on mobile. It’ll let people connect with the game through the app. They can then control elements on the screen as though they were using a controller. This actually isn’t new technology. The Jackbox Party Pack on PC allows much the same functionality. In any case, that should be a lot of fun for PS4 owners.
  • Google Drive will soon back up your entire computer. They’re launching a whole new uploader. When it goes live, people will be able to backup specific folders on their computer. It’ll then keep those folders in sync on Google Drive. You could conceivably backup your entire computer to the cloud. However, that’ll also likely use up all of the 15GB of storage that Google offers for free.
  • Supercell announced a new game called Brawl Stars. It’s a third person shooter with some MOBA elements. You and your team face off against another team. There are four game modes. One has you rushing a central point to collect gems. Another is to successfully attack a safe full of loot. We don’t know when it’s coming out. However, the live stream looked pretty good. We can’t imagine it’ll take them too long.
  • A new batch of Chromebooks now have Google Play Support. Some of them include the R13, 11 N7, Chromebook 15, Chromebook Flip C213, and about a dozen others. You can check out the Chromebook Wiki to see all of the new ones. The ones with the Beta Channel label are the ones getting support. There aren’t a ton comparatively speaking. However, it’s more than there were last week.
  • Telltale Gams announced plans to make an original game. Typically, they build games around popular IPs like Batman, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Minecraft. However, during an interview at E3, Job Stauffer of the company stated that it’s working on its own thing. It won’t be out for a long time. However, it should follow many of the same mechanics as its prior titles.

Slayaway Camp

Price: $1.99
Slayaway Camp is a retro puzzle game. It also has gratuitous amounts of graphic violence. It bills itself as an ode to VHS era horror movies. Thus, your goal is to kill a bunch of people across 140 levels and 11 videotapes. It also features tongue-in-cheek humor. This game is definitely not kid friendly. The graphics are reminiscent of games like Crossy Road. That helps take a lot of the impact out of the massive amounts of gore that you're going to produce. It's $1.99 with no in-app purchases.

Coloring Book for Creative Kids

Price: Free with in-app purchases
Coloring Book for Creative Kids is exactly what the title implies. It's a coloring book designed for children. It has a few dozen images that your kids can color. They can also use three different brush types (pencil, brush, and spray) in a variety of colors. There is also a free draw mode with a pre-determined background or a white background if they prefer. Images can be saved for the future or shared to social media. The app is still in beta. Thus, there are probably some bugs. We also imagine that it'll include some in-app purchases upon its official release. Here's hoping they're not too egregious because the app is otherwise lovely.

Asphalt Street Storm Racing

Price: Free with in-app purchases
Asphalt Street Storm Racing is the latest game in the popular Asphalt franchise. This one doesn't play like the others. The others were full on racing games. This one is a drag racing game similar to the likes of titles like CSR Racing. The mechanics are fairly typical of a game in this genre. You'll have to upgrade your care and shift gears properly in order to beat the competition. It has decent graphics and plenty of cars to unlock and play with. It also has online multiplayer capabilities, weather effects, and more. It's above average in most categories. However, there are some bugs and translation issues that GameLoft still has to work out.

Craftlog Recipes

Price: Free
Craftlog Recipes is like a social network mixed with a cooking app. The primary function is to show you tons of recipes for a variety of diet styles. However, people can actively engage with the community. That includes leaving comments, creating your own recipes, and even adding video. The app has a typical, clean look like many recipe apps. It even has support for translating recipes into multiple languages. It is in beta, though. That means there are likely some bugs that need worked out. However, it ran pretty well for us.

Angry Birds Evolution

Price: Free with in-app purchases
Angry Birds Evolution returns the series to its glory days. Well, it kind of does. You will once again have birds that you must lob into pigs. However, the game now features a 3D game board with over 100 birds to collect. It features card-collecting mechanics. Each bird can be upgraded and many can be combined for more powerful attacks. It'll also have weekly events, multiplayer options, and more. At its core, it's a lot like most card collecting games. However, this one has that family friendly Rovio charm. It's also a freemium game, but you probably guessed that by now.
